Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN EEstimated Breeding Values (EBVs) are based on the
combined analysis of all pedigree ad performance records on the New Zealand
and Australian databases. EBVs can be used to compare the estimated genetic
merit of animals for a range of growth, fertility and carcass traits.
EBVs reflect the relative genetic merit of the reported animals and are reported
to be the breed baseline of zero for each trait. However, the current breed
average has moved away from zero due to genetic improvement in the breed
over time.
On average, half of the sire’s EBV will be passed on to his progeny and
similarly for the dam. When comparing two animals, half of the difference in
the EBVs will be expressed in the progeny as superior genetic merit.
EBVs presented in this catalogue are calculated from the available performance
information on the animal, its parents, progeny and its close relatives across a
number of herds. This information is adjusted for age at measurement and
dam’s age while allowing for differences between herds, years, season of
calving, management effects and for mating and selection biases.
