Welcome to the Elgin

         Angus 2 year Bull Sale

Here we are again, another year has passed and I’m back struggling to produce something worth reading. I
often wonder if anyone actually reads these.
It’s been a strange 12 months with house prices skyrocketing, of difficulties getting our export products out
of the country which in turn impacted our stock sale prices which put more pressure on drought affected
farmers. It’s still an uncertain future going forward and there’s plenty to keep us on our toes.
Last winter was mild here at Elgin, and with having plenty of supplementary feed on board and a good
crop, we managed to sneak through. A good lambing percentage and almost no winter weather events
was positive moving into the spring. Calving went well and I must admit, feeding out when it’s dry is much
more pleasant. However, a mostly dry spring was a concern until we got a good dollop of rain at the start of
November. This wasn’t so good for the peas I had just sown. Who said farmers are never happy?!
The 2021 sale bulls have coped very well, all things considered. Growth rates have been good and weights
are where they should be. The three sires used Kaharau 610, Rangatira L35 and Cricklewood K46 have all
done a great job and left some top young sires.
I’m really excited about the first sons of Kaharau 610 offered for sale. He’s left a real stamp in his progeny of
good meaty bulls. This is the last crop of Cricklewood K46 sons we will offer. Over the past five years, he has
been an outstanding sire who leaves bulls of good bone and plenty of size. His sons for sale this year are no
exception. Our Rangatira L35 progeny are what you’d expect from a sire of this calibre. Size and correctness
are the order of the day here. Plenty to like for those wanting large weaners.
We are proud of the even line-up of bulls in our catalogue. The breeding programme at Elgin is consistently
producing easy-doing cattle with structural soundness and good temperament. This gives me confidence
that there is something here for almost any bull buyer.
Comprehensive structural assessments of each bull including semen testing has been conducted in partner-
ship with Vet Services in Hawkes Bay. This process reinforces my confidence in the doability of the bulls and
I guarantee them for three years, which gives you as a purchaser security when you buy from Elgin Angus.
Sarah and I are looking forward as always to seeing our existing clients, and welcoming new ones, at our
on-farm auction on Tuesday 15 June 2021 at 3.30pm. Once again, the auction will be online with bidr
if you are unable to make it to the sale.
I wouldn’t bet on it that we’ll all be vaccinated by Christmas and I wouldn’t bet on our travel bubbles staying
open but I would bet on an Elgin Angus bull. Every time. Don’t gamble with your herd.
