                Kia Toa Charolais

A very warm welcome to our 18th annual Kia Toa Charolais bull sale.
After a slight hiccup we have gone back to our regular sale date of
the last Monday of May. The world may never fully recover from the
COVID-19 pandemic, meaning that we will have to adjust our lives
accordingly; we are so very fortunate to live in GODZONE.
There has been a few changes on the Grainger farming front with our
eldest son, Rhys, and his family moving to the bright lights of Aria
from Taumarunui and Mark, our second son, taking over the lease of
650 acres of my original family farm. It is great to have family close
especially with the input they both have with the Charolais stud –
bloody good too when I’m dagging!
Auntie Cindy seems to fix everything in New Zealand but once again
let us down on the weather front. Our seasons are becoming more
and more unpredictable with the biggest issue being lack of rain, even
though not as bad as last year, making farming interesting.
The stud, itself, is in good heart. We have dropped the numbers,
slightly, of our calving females due to an intense culling criteria. Any
aged, under performing or with the slightest limp was gone which
did concern me slightly when the boys filled out an AHB form with my
name and tag number on it!
The bull numbers were down, this year, due to a very high percentage
of heifers born in 2019 and a couple of injuries. Good for the genetic
pool but not the bull sale.
Hemingford New Design N65, pictured on the cover, has his first
progeny on the ground now so we are looking forward to how his bull
calves progress ready for next years sale.
We flew south in June 2020, and purchased O99 Silverstream Ohio
from Brent & Anna Fisher. One major appeal about him was being
homozygous polled which is the direction we continue to head to. He
is the proverbial brick outhouse with great temperament – hopefully
he will do the business, we look forward to his calves this coming
       season.
This year, for the first time, we engaged Austins Ultrasound, to muscle
scan our bulls. This data will no doubt help our clients with their
selection options and us with our policies going forward.
All our bulls have been EBL & BVD tested clear and vaccinated however
we do recommend that all bulls receive a BVD booster vaccination prior
       to mating.
Please feel free to contact us at any time or check out our Kia Toa
       Charolais Facebook page.
