We kept Nascar as a herd sire as we believed he was the best son Olympus
had bred. We always thought so highly of Olympus and thought he was
an exceptional bull that had the Hereford qualities we strived for. Nascar
has those same qualities as his sire but is perhaps more moderate and is a
terrific shaped bull. He is sound with a great sires head and has that lovely
softness and easy doing attributes that we have found so prevalent in the
Olympus daughters. After the Irish Hereford Breed Society took such an
interest in Olympus a few years back it was only natural for them to take a
huge interest in Nascar so his semen has been exported and used by many
breeders in Ireland and England and some well known studs in Australia.
His first set of calves are really good and so consistent.

In 2020 we purchased this homozygous polled Hereford bull from
Maungahina in Masterton. He wasn’t the bull we went to buy but when
we saw him he was the bull we had to buy. We had such success with our
last bull- Gay Olympus who we purchased of Maungahina as well so it
was a no brainer to go back to where we had such success before. We are
really looking forward to his calves in the spring. He is a really easy doing
sire with a tremendous coat and skin and a great outlook. After he arrived
home in July last year he just kicked on so well. We have never known an
animal to shift so well. He went to a lot of cows and came through in good
condition. We are very conscious of the reasons why people want horned
cattle but at the same time conscious of the animal welfare issues and
regulations these days. We are excited about this bull.
HORNED OR POLLED? OUR DIRECTION
We would love to continue to breed a herd that was completely pure Horned Herefords but we have to be mindful that polled cattle are more
in demand. Due to new legislation and just the general ease of management, having polled cattle makes more sense.
We have always believed though that horned cattle whether Charolais or Herefords have always had more natural constitution, toughness,
strength of bone, power and performance. It would be very easy to go find a homozygous polled bull and have the entire herd polled in one
generation like we could have done with the Charolais also, but we have to be mindful not to lose the attributes that give the Hereford breed
its character. We feel that over the years we have been able to breed polled Charolais cattle without losing the characteristics that are so typical
of the Charolais breed. With that in mind our direction with the Herefords is something similar. We would like to breed some of our own
polled cattle that only have a sniff of polled blood in the pedigree and continue to infuse horned genetics back through. Eventually like the
Charolais we would like to cross heterozygous polled cattle over each other.
We have used some polled genetics lightly over the last couple of years. These bulls have been older proven sires that are of a type that we
like. The last couple of years we have bred a few beautiful heifers by Otapawa Spark and we look forward to gettig some Pute Nascar progeny
out of the first of them this year. We will always have our pure horned base of cows that we will keep purebred. We realise there are still
people out there who want to use pure horned genetics and we would like to continue delivering these cattle. We must remember that we
can use good strong Horned Hereford genetics over straight bred Angus cows and have all polled progeny anyway because Angus cows are
homozygous polled.
We are really excited at how far we have come with the Herefords over the years and how we have improved the consistency of the type of
cattle we are breeding. We are really excited about the new sires we are using and believe this line of bulls are the right type that will breed
good hardy hill country cows.
